Exploration of the Sanguinaires Islands

Want to discover one of the most beautiful panoramas in Corsica during your stay at the Mare & Monti*** hotel in Porto Pollo? Head to the Sanguinaires Islands, this mysterious archipelago that watches over the Gulf of Ajaccio. From Porto Pollo, several routes are available to reach the Pointe de la Parata, the departure point for these legendary islands.

Accessing the Sanguinaires Islands from Porto Pollo

By car, three routes are available:
  • Via the D302: 1 hour 36 minutes - 66.5 km.
  • Via the T40: 1 hour 41 minutes - 74.8 km.
  • Via the D55: 1 hour 49 minutes - 74.1 km.

Once there, you can board the boats of Mare Bellu, Nave Va, or JPS Aventure. Or take a shuttle, with departures every hour from the Tino Rossi port in Ajaccio or the Porticcio pontoon.
The crossing takes about an hour, with a landing on Mezu Mare, the largest of the islands.

Discover the wild beauty of the Sanguinaires Islands

Majestically located opposite the Pointe de la Parata, the Sanguinaires Islands are a small archipelago composed of four red porphyry islets:
  • Mezu Mare, the main island.
  • Isolotto, nicknamed Cormorant Island.
  • Cala d'Alga.
  • Porri.

Their flamboyant colors at sunset are said to have earned them the name Sanguinaires… but others evoke the reddish hue of certain local plants such as the frankenia.
Whatever the origin of the name, one thing is certain: the site, classified as a Natura 2000 site, is strikingly beautiful! This natural sanctuary is home to exceptional flora with over 150 plant species, some of which are endemic.
During your walk, you'll also have the chance to spot Cory's shearwaters, Audouin's gulls, and black-headed gulls.

Mezu Mare, once inhabited by coral fishermen from Africa, is dominated by a lighthouse built in 1838, which influenced the imagination of writers such as Alphonse Daudet.
Before embarking, a stop at Pointe de la Parata will allow you to admire the archipelago from the 16th-century Genoese tower.
The interior is not open to visitors, but the panoramic view from its surroundings is well worth the detour!

Back from your getaway to the Sanguinaires Islands, relax in your room or mini-villa at the Mare & Monti*** hotel in Porto Pollo.
